Bruce Keene MVP Track Scholarship

Bruce Keene as a high school student and as an adult

The Bruce Keene Track Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has been accepted to college and is selected by the coaching staff as the Boys’ Track and Field MVP. The scholarship recognizes leadership, commitment, and overall achievement as a well-rounded student-athlete.

Bruce Keene was himself the track MVP all four years during his time at H-F (1973-1977) and still holds the school record in the 800 meters. Following a diagnosis of brain cancer and a period of self-reflection, Bruce established the scholarship as a way to give back to the program he believed played a pivotal role in shaping his youth. His vision extended beyond a financial award—for eleven years he sought to support and mentor student-athletes through the collegiate process, offering sound advice and continued moral support.

Over time, the scholarship has evolved into a highly coveted honor that reflects Bruce’s lasting legacy and his commitment to making a difference. H-F Track Coach Nate Beebe noted that Bruce “made it his mission to bring back alumni to speak to current athletes about how track and field impacted their lives and to pass on the wisdom they’ve gained over the years.”

One of the scholarship’s recipients, E.J. Dorsey, captured Bruce’s impact in an open letter, writing, “You believed in me more than I believed in myself at times, and I can never repay you for that.” He continued, “The best way to honor you for the opportunities you gave me would be to pay it forward. And I plan to do just that.”

That sentiment reflects Bruce’s original goal—to recognize potential, inspire confidence, and create a legacy of paying it forward.
